What height does a standing desk adjust between?

The electric models in this range move between 73cm and 118cm. That covers a standard seated desk height at the low end and a standing height suitable for most adults at the top. Exact ranges are listed on each product page.

How much weight will it hold?

80kg across the range. For context, a large monitor is around 5 to 8kg and a desktop PC around 10kg, so a typical setup uses a fraction of that. The frame itself is not designed to take body weight, so don't sit or stand on it.

What's the difference between a single motor and a dual motor desk?

A single motor drives both legs through a connecting bar. A dual motor has one in each leg, which raises the desk faster and usually handles more weight. For a laptop, one or two monitors and normal desk items, a single motor is entirely sufficient.

Which width should I choose?

120cm suits a laptop or single monitor in a compact space. 140cm is the middle option and works for most home offices. 160cm gives room for two monitors side by side. All are 60cm deep.

Is it noisy when it moves?

The motors run at under 50 decibels, which is roughly the level of a quiet conversation. You'll hear it, but it isn't loud enough to disrupt a call or wake anyone in the next room.

How difficult is assembly?

It arrives flat packed with instructions and fixings. Two people and around an hour is realistic. The frame goes together first, then the top is fixed to it, which is the part where a second pair of hands genuinely helps.

Is it safe with children around?

The control panel has a safety lock that disables the buttons, which is worth using if children have access to the room. Keep the area underneath clear when the desk is lowering, and keep the power cable tucked away.

What are the delivery and returns terms?

Free delivery to UK mainland addresses only, dispatched within 3 to 5 working days on a tracked service. Change of mind returns are accepted within 30 days if the item is unused and in original packaging, with return postage at your cost. Damaged or faulty items are put right at no cost to you.

A standing desk is really just a desk that moves. Press a button, the top rises, and you carry on working. Press it again and you're back where you started. The appeal is being able to change position through the day rather than being locked into one for eight hours.

The electric models in the range adjust from 73cm to 118cm, which covers a normal seated desk height at the bottom and a comfortable standing height for most adults at the top. The motor moves the top at around 20mm per second and runs at under 50 decibels, so it's quieter than a conversation and won't interrupt a call.

Control panels have up and down arrows plus three memory presets, so you can save your sitting height, your standing height and one more for whoever else uses the desk. There's a safety lock to stop the controls being pressed accidentally, and some models include a timer.

Widths run 120cm, 140cm and 160cm, all at 60cm deep. The 120cm suits a laptop and a single monitor in a small room. The 140cm is the middle ground and the most popular size. The 160cm gives you room for a dual monitor setup with space either side. Weight capacity across the range is 80kg, which is well beyond what a normal desk setup weighs.

Practical extras vary by model but typically include a built-in drawer, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, cable routing holes and a bag hook underneath.

Working out if the height range fits you

This is the thing worth checking before anything else. The rough guide for standing is that the desk surface should sit around elbow height when your arms are bent at about ninety degrees. For most adults that lands somewhere between 95cm and 115cm depending on height.

A 73cm to 118cm range covers the large majority of people. If you're over about 6ft 3in you may find the top of the range tight, particularly if you wear thick-soled shoes. If you're under about 5ft you may find the seated minimum slightly high, though a footrest solves that easily.

Measure your elbow height standing in the shoes you normally wear indoors, then check it against the maximum height on the product page.

Single motor or dual motor

Single motor desks have one motor driving both legs through a connecting bar. Dual motor desks have a motor in each leg. Dual motor is faster, generally quieter under load, and holds more weight. Single motor is cheaper and perfectly adequate for a normal setup with a laptop, a monitor or two and the usual desk clutter.

If you're loading three monitors, a heavy monitor arm and a PC tower onto the top, look at the weight capacity carefully. If it's a laptop and a screen, single motor is fine.

Choosing the width

Depth is 60cm across the range, which is standard and works for a monitor at a sensible viewing distance. Width is where the decision is.

120cm is enough for a laptop or a single monitor plus a notepad. It suits a spare room or a corner of a bedroom. 140cm gives you a monitor and comfortable space to write beside it. 160cm takes two monitors side by side without them being cramped.

Also measure the room, not just the desk. You need space to stand at it and space to push the chair back when you sit.

Cables

Cable management matters more on a standing desk than a fixed one, because everything plugged in has to travel a 45cm range twice a day. Leave enough slack in every cable to reach full height, and route them together rather than letting them dangle separately. Most desks include routing holes in the top and a tray or clips underneath.

The desk itself needs a mains socket. It runs on standard UK supply.

Assembly and use

Electric desks arrive flat packed with the frame in sections and the top separate. It's a two person job, largely because the top is heavy and awkward to turn over. Allow an hour or so.

Once built, keep the area under the desk clear. Anything taller than about 50cm underneath can foul the mechanism as the desk lowers. Don't sit or stand on the frame itself, since it's built to carry equipment rather than body weight.

Where else to look

For fixed height options see office desks, folding desks and L shaped desks. To finish the setup, browse office chairs and office storage.
