Catio or cat run: what is the difference?
People often use the two names for the same thing. A catio (a mix of "cat" and "patio") tends to be a larger enclosure that sits on a patio or lawn, often next to the house. A cat run is usually longer and narrower, giving your cat room to walk and stretch out. Both do the same job. They let your cat spend time outside while keeping them in a space you control.
Why cat owners choose a catio
Many indoor cats enjoy fresh air and something new to look at. A catio lets them watch birds, feel the breeze and lie in the sun without being able to roam. It also stops them bringing home birds or mice, which many gardeners are pleased about. For outdoor cats, a catio can be a safe place to spend time while you are out at work, or during times when you would rather keep them close to home.
How to pick the right one
Start by measuring the space you have. A compact cat condo will fit on a small patio or balcony, while a full enclosure needs more ground. Think about how many cats will use it, as each cat will want its own spot to sit. If you want to move the catio between the garden and the patio, a model on wheels makes that much easier. Check the height too. Cats like to climb, and more levels means more space to use without taking up extra floor area.
Where to put your catio
Pick level ground that gets some sun but also has shade during the hottest part of the day. A spot near a back door or window makes it easy to let your cat in and out. Try to avoid areas that take the full force of the wind or rain. Always make sure your cat has fresh water, somewhere to shelter, and a way back indoors.
Looking after a wooden catio
Wood lasts longer when it is looked after. Treat the frame once a year with a pet-safe wood treatment, and check the mesh, hinges and fixings for any wear. Clean the platforms and the floor regularly. In winter, some owners move smaller catios into a garage or shed, or add a cover to keep the worst of the weather off.
