How to choose a chicken coop with a run
Start with the number of hens you plan to keep, then give them more space than you think they need. Chickens that have room to move, dust bathe and get away from each other tend to be calmer and get on better. The capacity figures manufacturers give are a maximum. If you're between two sizes, go for the bigger one. Also think about how you'll clean it. Pull-out trays, openable roofs and walk-in access all make regular jobs quicker.
Wooden coop or walk-in run?
A wooden coop with a run works well for two to four hens in a smaller garden. Everything is in one unit and it's quick to set up. A walk-in run suits bigger flocks, or anyone who wants to stand inside to feed, clean and spend time with their birds. Many keepers go for both, placing a wooden coop inside a walk-in run for extra space and protection.
Keeping foxes out
Foxes are the biggest threat to backyard chickens in the UK, and they're active in towns as well as the countryside. Shut your hens in their house every night, as it's the most important thing you can do. To stop foxes and rats digging under a run, lay wire mesh flat on the ground around the outside edge, or bury it a little way into the soil. Check the mesh and fixings regularly for any gaps.
Where to put your chicken run
Choose level ground with some shade during the day and shelter from strong winds. Try not to place the run where water pools after rain, since muddy ground gets messy quickly. If your run sits on grass, move it every so often if you can, or cover the floor with wood chip or bark to keep it drier underfoot.
