How to choose living room storage

Start with the space you have, not the furniture you like the look of. Measure the wall you want to use, and check the width, depth and height against each product. Allow room for doors and drawers to open, and make sure there's a clear path to walk past. It's also worth measuring doorways and stairs, especially for larger sideboards and solid wood pieces that arrive fully assembled.

Picking the right TV unit

A TV unit should be at least as wide as your television, and ideally a little wider, so the TV doesn't hang over the edges. Screen sizes are measured corner to corner, so check the actual width of your TV rather than going by its size in inches. Look at the maximum weight the unit can hold, and think about how you'll run cables. Units with holes in the back panel, or open shelves, make this much easier.

Matching finishes and materials

You don't need every piece to match exactly, but sticking to one or two wood tones or colours helps a room feel pulled together. Solid wood such as mango and acacia brings warmth and texture, and every piece has its own grain. Engineered wood is lighter and more affordable, and comes in more finishes, including white, black, grey and high gloss.

Storage for smaller living rooms

In a small room, think tall rather than wide. A tall bookcase or display cabinet uses wall space without taking up much floor. Wall-mounted TV units and floating shelves keep the floor clear, which makes a room feel bigger. Pieces with closed cupboards hide clutter better than open shelves.

Keeping tall furniture safe

Tall bookcases and cabinets can tip forward if they're climbed on or loaded unevenly. Fix them to the wall with an anti-tip kit, particularly in homes with children or pets. Put heavier items on the lower shelves and lighter ones at the top.
