Choosing a cage for birds
Bird cages need enough width for your bird to stretch and flit between perches, so the wider models with a stand suit budgies, finches and canaries well. The larger cages work better for parrots and parakeets, which need more room and something to keep them busy. Look for an openable top for easy access, a pull-out tray to speed up cleaning, and feeding bowls you can refill without opening the whole cage. A couple of the smaller cages also have a handle, handy if you take your bird to the vet.
Cages for hamsters, gerbils and rats
For small rodents, floor space and things to do matter more than height. The multi-tier cages here come with tubes, ramps and a wheel, giving hamsters and gerbils room to run, climb and tunnel. A deep base is worth having, as it holds more bedding and lets them burrow, which is natural behaviour for them. The storage shelf on some models is a nice touch for keeping food and treats close by.
Homes for rabbits and guinea pigs
The small animal cages suit rabbits and guinea pigs, working as both a hutch and a playhouse for indoor use. They give your pet a defined space to rest and feed while keeping bedding contained. If your rabbit or guinea pig will spend time outdoors, it's worth pairing an indoor cage with a run or a weatherproof hutch.
