Tempered Glass Makes the Difference
Worth mentioning straight away: the glass coffee tables we stock use tempered glass, not regular glass. Tempered glass goes through a heating and cooling process that makes it much stronger and safer. If it does somehow break, it shatters into small, relatively harmless chunks rather than dangerous shards. You'd need to really go at it to break tempered glass – normal living room use isn't going to cause problems.
That said, glass does show marks more than other materials. Fingerprints, dust, water rings – they all show up clearly on a glass surface. If that's going to drive you mad, or you've got young kids constantly touching everything, glass might not be your best choice. Some people don't mind the maintenance, others find it irritating.
Designs and Configurations
Glass coffee tables come in various styles. Some glass coffee tables are entirely made of glass with thick panels forming both the top and base. Others combine glass tops with different base materials like metal frames, wooden legs. These mixed-material designs for coffee tables can work well in more traditional living rooms where an all-glass table might look too modern.
Two-tier designs give you extra storage or display space on a lower glass shelf. Handy for keeping magazines, the remote, or decorative items whilst leaving the top clear for actual use. Shapes vary from standard rectangles to round, oval, or more unusual geometric designs like hexagons.
Tinted glass options exist if you find clear glass too stark. Black or smoked glass still maintains that see-through quality but with a bit more substance visually. They also hide marks slightly better than crystal-clear glass, though you'll still need to clean them regularly.
