Why keep your rabbit indoors?
Rabbits are sociable, curious animals, and many enjoy being around people. Keeping them indoors means you see more of their personality, and you're more likely to spot changes in their behaviour or appetite early. An indoor rabbit is also safe from very hot and very cold weather, flies and foxes. If you have any concerns about your rabbit's health, speak to your vet.
A hutch is a base, not a home on its own
An indoor hutch works best as your rabbit's bedroom, somewhere to go to rest and eat. It isn't meant to hold them all day. Rabbits need several hours a day outside their hutch to run, jump and explore. Many owners leave the hutch door open inside a bunny-proofed room or a pet playpen, so their rabbit can come and go as they like.
Choosing the right size
Your rabbit should be able to lie fully stretched out, stand up on their back legs, and take a few hops from one end of the hutch to the other. If you have two rabbits, go bigger. Two-tier hutches give you extra space without taking up more of the floor, which suits smaller homes and flats.
Where to put an indoor hutch
Choose a quiet corner that isn't in direct sunlight and isn't next to a radiator, a draughty door or a loud TV. Rabbits like to feel part of what's going on, so a spot in the living room or kitchen diner usually works better than a spare room nobody goes into. Keep cables tucked away or covered, since rabbits love to chew them.
Litter training your rabbit
Rabbits tend to go to the toilet in the same spot, so most can be litter trained. Put a litter tray in the corner of the hutch where they already go, fill it with a paper-based litter, and add some hay on top. Avoid clumping cat litter. Once they use the tray reliably, cleaning becomes much easier.
Cleaning and care
Remove wet bedding and droppings every day, and do a full clean of the hutch once a week. The slide-out trays make this job quicker. Rabbits like to chew, so give them safe chew toys to keep their teeth busy and help protect the wood of the hutch.
