How to choose the right pet stroller
Start with your pet's weight and length. Every stroller has a maximum weight limit, and your pet should be comfortably under it. Next, measure your pet from nose to the base of the tail while they're lying down. They need to be able to turn around and lie flat inside the stroller without being squashed. If you're between two sizes, choose the bigger one.
H3: Strollers for cats and small dogs
For cats, puppies and toy breeds, a compact 4-wheel stroller is usually enough. Look for mesh windows on several sides so your pet can see out and air can flow through. A zip-up cover makes it easy to close the stroller completely if your pet gets nervous. Cats in particular feel safer when they can hide, so a stroller with a fully enclosed cabin is a good idea.
Strollers for medium and large dogs
Bigger dogs need a stroller with a low entry, so they can step in without being lifted. Check the weight limit carefully, and look for larger wheels and shock absorbers if you'll be using it on rough paths or pavements. These strollers are heavier and take up more space when folded, so measure your car boot before you buy.
Getting your pet used to the stroller
Put the stroller in your living room for a few days before your first walk. Leave the door open, add a familiar blanket and drop a few treats inside. Once your pet is happy getting in, push them slowly around the house, then take short trips outside. Most pets settle in quickly if you don't rush them.
Staying safe on the move
Always clip your pet's harness to the safety tether inside the stroller, not their collar. Put the brakes on whenever you stop, and never leave your pet alone in the stroller. On hot days, avoid the midday sun and keep the mesh windows open so air can move through. If your dog is recovering from an injury or an operation, check with your vet before using a stroller.
