Hydraulic or fixed height: which do you need?
A fixed-height table does the job for a single small or medium dog. If you groom more than one dog, or groom dogs of very different sizes, a hydraulic table is worth the extra cost. You can drop it low so a big dog can step on more easily, then raise it to a height where you don't have to bend over. For anyone grooming several dogs a week, that makes a real difference by the end of the day.
Setting up a grooming space at home
Pick a spot with good light and a floor that's easy to sweep, like a utility room, garage or conservatory. Leave enough space to walk all the way round the table. Hydraulic tables have four levelling feet, so they stay steady even on floors that aren't perfectly flat. Keep your brushes, clippers and towels within reach, so you never need to step away from your dog mid-groom.
Using the H bar and grooming loops
The H bar clamps onto the table and can be set to different heights. The grooming loops attach to it and go gently around your dog's neck. They help keep your dog standing in one place while you work. Set the loop so there's a little slack, and never tie your dog in tightly.
Grooming safely
Never leave your dog alone on a grooming table, even for a moment, and even with a loop in place. A dog that jumps or slips while attached to a loop can get hurt. Take your dog off the table before you answer the door or fetch anything. If your dog is nervous, keep the first few sessions short and give plenty of treats, so they come to link the table with good things.
Keeping your equipment clean
The rubber table tops wipe clean with warm soapy water. Dry them afterwards so water doesn't sit on the surface. Check the pump and the levelling feet from time to time, and wipe down the frame to stop hair and dirt building up. Rinse a steel bath after each use and let it dry out properly.
