Choosing the Right Bar Stool Height
Measure from the floor to the underside of your worktop before you buy. You want around 25-30cm between the top of the seat and the underside of the counter. That gives you room for your legs without leaving you sitting too low to eat or chat comfortably.
As a rough guide:
- Kitchen counters around 90cm high suit stools with a seat height of 60-65cm
- Bar tables around 105cm high suit a seat height of 75-80cm
If different people in the house will use the same stools, a gas lift design lets everyone set their own height. Swivel seats are handy at an island, since you can turn to talk without dragging the stool across the floor.
How Many Stools Will Fit?
Allow roughly 60cm of counter width per stool. Wider seats and stools with arms need a little more. Squeezing in an extra stool usually means knocking elbows, so it's often better to go with one fewer.
Storing Wine at Home
Bottles with corks should lie on their side. This keeps the cork in contact with the wine so it doesn't dry out and let air in. Screw-top bottles are fine upright, although a rack still keeps things tidy.
Heat and light do the most damage, so keep racks away from ovens, radiators and sunny windows. A cool cupboard or an alcove away from the kitchen is often a better spot than you'd think. Wooden racks suit a farmhouse or rustic kitchen, while black metal works well in a more industrial space.
Wine Coolers: What to Check
A wine cooler holds bottles at a steady temperature, usually a few degrees warmer than a normal fridge. Before you buy, think about:
- Capacity: count the bottles you actually keep, then add a few
- Freestanding or built in: freestanding models need a gap around the back and sides for air to flow, so they shouldn't be boxed into kitchen units
- Where it'll go: a small countertop model can sit on a sideboard or at the end of a worktop
Why a Drinks Trolley Earns Its Place
A trolley gives you a bar without giving up floor space for good. Look for castors that lock, a raised rail or lip so bottles can't slide off, and a size that fits where it will live most of the time. Gold and glass tends to suit a living room, while wood or black metal sits nicely in a kitchen or dining room.
