A drinks trolley is built to be seen. It usually sits in the living room or dining room, so looks matter as much as storage. Expect open shelves, a slim frame and finishes like rose gold, black or brass effect.
A kitchen trolley is built to work. You'll often find drawers, cupboards, towel rails and a sturdy top. White MDF and natural wood are common finishes, as they sit comfortably alongside most kitchen units.
If you only have room for one, a wooden kitchen trolley with a wine rack is a good all-rounder.
Which Type of Kitchen Trolley Suits You?
Island trolleys. These add a movable worktop to your kitchen. Some have a fold-out or extendable top, so you get more prep space when you need it and a smaller footprint when you don't.
Storage trolleys. Multi-tier designs with drawers or shelves keep pans, utensils and dry food organised. They're great for kitchens with limited cupboard space.
Slim tiered trolleys. Narrow plastic or metal trolleys slide into tight gaps. Open tiers suit fruit, onions and potatoes, and lightweight designs work just as well in a bathroom or craft room.
Where a Drinks Trolley Works Best
In the living room, tuck it beside an armchair or bookcase. In the dining room, park it by the table so wine and water glasses are close to hand. On a dry summer evening you can even roll it onto the patio, although most are made for indoor use, so bring it back in afterwards.
Things to Check Before You Buy
Wheels. Locking castors stop the trolley drifting when you lean on it or chop on the top. Some drinks trolleys have two wheels and two fixed legs, so you tilt them to move.
Size. Measure the space it'll sit in and the doorways you'll push it through.
Weight. A 75cl bottle of wine weighs roughly 1.2-1.5kg, and tins and pans add up just as quickly. Check the maximum load on the product page and keep heavier items on the lower shelves.
Edges. Raised rails or baskets help stop bottles and jars sliding off while you move it.
