Which CAT JOY scratcher suits your cat?

Start with your cat’s weight, then think about how they like to rest.

The Snug is the smallest at 59 x 29 x 13 cm. It’s made for kittens and small cats up to 4 kg, and sits close to the floor.

The Lounge measures 70 x 29 x 14 cm and suits most adult cats up to 6 kg. Cats who like to sprawl tend to get on well with it. The deck rises at both ends, so there’s room to stretch fully before curling into the dip in the middle for a nap.

Some cats would rather watch the room from cover. The Pavilion (68 x 29 x 20 cm) gives them a den underneath and a wide scratching deck on top, and takes cats up to 5 kg. At 20 cm high, small or older cats can step up onto the deck without a big jump.

Why cardboard?

There’s no sisal rope or carpet on a CAT JOY scratcher. Corrugated cardboard has a slight give that cats like to dig their claws into, and it holds body heat too. That’s why the Lounge works as a warm bed as well as a scratcher. The wood sides keep the cardboard in shape and stop it looking tatty after a few months of use.

Getting your cat to use it

Put the scratcher right next to the spot your cat already scratches, such as the arm of a sofa or a quiet corner of the hallway. The Pavilion is compact enough to sit beside a sofa or slide under a side table. CAT JOY suggests rubbing a pinch of catnip on it on the first day to get your cat’s attention.

Looking after a CAT JOY scratcher

The five dense layers of cardboard keep most crumbs inside the scratcher instead of on your floor. When the top face starts to look worn, turn it over and use the second side. The Lounge weighs 2.4 kg, which keeps it steady on hard floors when your cat leans into a good scratch. The Pavilion is lighter at 1.5 kg and easy to move from room to room.

More for your cat

CAT JOY scratchers sit low to the floor. If your cat likes to scratch upwards or climb, take a look at our scratching posts and cat trees. For a separate place to sleep, we also stock cat beds and cat houses.

Delivery and returns

Every CAT JOY order ships free to UK mainland addresses and arrives in 3-5 working days, with no hidden fees. If you change your mind, you can send your order back, but you’ll need to pay the return postage.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who makes CAT JOY cat scratchers?

A small UK company called CAT JOY LTD, based in Peterborough. Every scratcher in our range is made by hand in its own workshop there, using a five-layer corrugated cardboard core with real wood sides. The brand began when Alex’s cat, Alice, kept wearing out shop-bought scratchers, so Alex decided to build a sturdier one from scratch.

  • What are CAT JOY scratchers made of?

Corrugated cardboard in five dense layers, held inside a wooden frame with water-based glue. You won’t find any plastic in them. The wooden facade comes in brown, white or black, so you can pick one that sits well with your floor or furniture. Cardboard also holds body heat, which is why the Lounge doubles as a warm spot for naps.

  • Which CAT JOY scratcher is best for a kitten?

The Snug. At 59 x 29 x 13 cm it’s the smallest scratcher in our CAT JOY range, made for kittens and small cats up to 4 kg. It’s only 13 cm high, so it sits close to the floor. Once your cat grows past 4 kg, the Lounge is the next step up and takes cats up to 6 kg.

  • What size CAT JOY scratcher do I need for an adult cat?

For most adult cats, go for the Lounge. It’s 70 cm long and suits cats up to 6 kg, with ends that rise so your cat can stretch out before curling into the dip in the middle. If your cat would rather hide than sprawl, the Pavilion is 68 cm long, 20 cm high and takes cats up to 5 kg.

  • Do CAT JOY scratchers come flat-pack?

No. The Pavilion is made and fully assembled by hand in Peterborough, and the Lounge is a single solid unit, so there’s nothing to build. Lift it out of the box and set it down. At 2.4 kg, the Lounge is heavy enough to stay put on hard floors without skidding when your cat claws at it.

  • How do I make a CAT JOY scratcher last longer?

Flip it. Each CAT JOY scratcher has two scratchable faces, so when the top side starts to wear you turn it over and your cat gets a fresh surface to work on. The five dense cardboard layers also keep most of the crumbs inside the scratcher, which means less tidying up around it as it wears in.

  • Where should I put a CAT JOY scratcher?

Right next to the place your cat already scratches, such as the arm of the sofa or a quiet hallway corner. The Pavilion is small enough to sit beside a sofa or slide under a side table. On the first day, CAT JOY suggests rubbing a pinch of catnip on the cardboard to draw your cat over to it.

  • Can I buy CAT JOY scratchers from Bossy Cat?

Yes. Our CAT JOY range includes the Snug, Lounge and Pavilion, each with a brown, white or black wooden facade. Delivery is free on all orders to UK mainland addresses and arrives in 3-5 working days, with no hidden fees. If you change your mind, you can return your order, but the return postage is paid by you.
