Layering Light Around the Home

Most rooms look best with light coming from more than one place. Think of it in three parts: general light from the ceiling, task light for reading or working, and softer accent light to make the room feel cosy. A table lamp in one corner and a wall light in another can change the feel of a living room completely, even if the ceiling light stays off.

Placing a Table Lamp

On a bedside table, the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level when you're sitting up in bed. That way the light reaches your book without shining straight into your eyes. In the living room, lamps work well on side tables next to the sofa or on a sideboard, where they can light up a wall and make the space feel bigger. As a general rule, the shade should be a little wider than the base so the lamp looks balanced.

Getting a Desk Lamp Right

Place your desk lamp on the opposite side to your writing hand. If you're right-handed, it goes on the left, which stops your hand casting a shadow over what you're working on. An adjustable arm or gooseneck lets you point the light exactly where you need it. Clamp-on lamps are handy on smaller desks, as they fix to the edge and leave the surface clear.

Plug-in or Hardwired Wall Lights?

Plug-in wall lights are the easy option. They fix to the wall with screws, and the cable runs down to a normal socket, so there's no electrical work involved. Hardwired wall lights connect directly to your home's wiring and give a neater finish with no visible cable. These should always be fitted by a qualified electrician. Check the product description to see which type you're buying.

Choosing the Right Bulb

Brightness is measured in lumens rather than watts. As a rough guide, a 450 lumen bulb gives about the same light as an old 40W bulb, and 800 lumens is similar to 60W.

Colour temperature makes a big difference too. Warm white, around 2700-3000K, is best for living rooms and bedrooms. Cooler white, around 4000K, suits desks and home offices where you need to concentrate.

Before ordering bulbs, check the fitting your lamp takes. The most common in the UK are B22 bayonet, E27 large screw and E14 small screw. Some of our lamps come with a bulb included, while others don't, so the product page will tell you what you need.

Delivery and Returns

We deliver free to all UK mainland addresses, and most orders arrive within 3-5 working days. There are no hidden fees at checkout. If you change your mind, you can return your lamp or wall light, but the return postage is at your own cost. If your order arrives damaged or faulty, please contact our customer service team and we'll arrange the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

  • What's the difference between a table lamp and a desk lamp?

A table lamp gives soft, general light and is mainly used to create a relaxed feel in a room. A desk lamp gives brighter, more focused light for reading or working, and usually has an adjustable arm or head so you can direct it.

  • What colour light is best for a bedroom?

Warm white light, around 2700-3000K, is usually best in bedrooms. It feels softer and more relaxing than cool white light, which is better suited to desks and work areas.

  • How bright should a desk lamp be?

For reading and computer work, many people find somewhere between 450 and 800 lumens works well. A dimmable lamp is a good choice, as you can turn it up for detailed tasks and down when you just need a little light.

  • Do I need an electrician to fit wall lights?

It depends on the type. Plug-in wall lights just need screwing to the wall and plugging into a socket. Hardwired wall lights connect to your home's electrics and should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

  • How high should wall lights be mounted?

In hallways and living rooms, wall lights are often fitted around 1.5-1.8m from the floor. Beside the bed, reading lights tend to sit a bit lower, roughly at shoulder height when you're sitting up.

  • Do your lamps come with bulbs?

Some do and some don't. Each product page states whether a bulb is included and which fitting the lamp takes, so you can order the right bulb if needed.

  • How much is delivery and how long will it take?

Delivery is free on all orders to UK mainland addresses. Most orders arrive within 3-5 working days, with no hidden fees at checkout.

  • Can I return a lamp if I change my mind?

Yes. Change of mind returns are accepted, but you'll need to cover the cost of return postage. If your lamp or wall light arrives damaged or faulty, get in touch and we'll help sort it out.

Ordered from Bossy Cat after shopping around a bit. Their price was the best I found and there were no sneaky extras at checkout, which I appreciated.
Delivery turned up in about 4 days, free, well packaged.
Had a quick question before ordering and their customer service got back to me the same day. Proper reply too, not a copy paste job.
All sorted, no hassle. Would use again.
