Layering Light Around the Home
Most rooms look best with light coming from more than one place. Think of it in three parts: general light from the ceiling, task light for reading or working, and softer accent light to make the room feel cosy. A table lamp in one corner and a wall light in another can change the feel of a living room completely, even if the ceiling light stays off.
Placing a Table Lamp
On a bedside table, the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level when you're sitting up in bed. That way the light reaches your book without shining straight into your eyes. In the living room, lamps work well on side tables next to the sofa or on a sideboard, where they can light up a wall and make the space feel bigger. As a general rule, the shade should be a little wider than the base so the lamp looks balanced.
Getting a Desk Lamp Right
Place your desk lamp on the opposite side to your writing hand. If you're right-handed, it goes on the left, which stops your hand casting a shadow over what you're working on. An adjustable arm or gooseneck lets you point the light exactly where you need it. Clamp-on lamps are handy on smaller desks, as they fix to the edge and leave the surface clear.
Plug-in or Hardwired Wall Lights?
Plug-in wall lights are the easy option. They fix to the wall with screws, and the cable runs down to a normal socket, so there's no electrical work involved. Hardwired wall lights connect directly to your home's wiring and give a neater finish with no visible cable. These should always be fitted by a qualified electrician. Choosing the Right Bulb
Brightness is measured in lumens rather than watts. As a rough guide, a 450 lumen bulb gives about the same light as an old 40W bulb, and 800 lumens is similar to 60W.
Colour temperature makes a big difference too. Warm white, around 2700-3000K, is best for living rooms and bedrooms. Cooler white, around 4000K, suits desks and home offices where you need to concentrate.
Before ordering bulbs, check the fitting your lamp takes. The most common in the UK are B22 bayonet, E27 large screw and E14 small screw. Some of our lamps come with a bulb included, while others don't, so the product page will tell you what you need.

If you change your mind, you can return your lamp or wall light, but the return postage is at your own cost.
