Pressure-fit or screw-fit
The big decision is usually how the gate attaches. Pressure-fit gates hold in place by tension against the door frame or wall, so there's no drilling and they're easy to take down or move, which makes them ideal for renting or for doorways. Screw-fit gates are fixed to the wall and tend to be the safer choice at the top of stairs, since they can't be knocked loose. A few of the gates here come with extensions and adjustable screws so you can fine-tune the fit.
Getting the width right
Measure the gap before you buy, as gates only fit within a set range. The standard options cover openings around 74 to 100cm, while the wide stair gates stretch up to 115cm for bigger doorways and hallways. If you've got an unusually wide gap, the multi-panel playpens and folding wooden barriers can span much larger spaces, up to 432cm.
Freestanding and flexible options
Not every situation suits a fixed gate. The freestanding folding barriers stand on their own feet and can be repositioned in seconds, which works well for open-plan rooms or when you just need a temporary divide. The pressure-fit gate with a built-in cat door is worth a look in multi-pet homes, letting the cat pass through while keeping the dog where you want it.
